5 Cold Hard Facts About Your Old A/C and Heat Pump System

You may not be familiar with the Montreal Protocol or the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Clean Air Act, but if you have an older residential AC or heat pump system, this important information will hit close to home:

As part of this worldwide Protocol and the EPAs efforts at home to reduce ozone-destroying chlorines, the Freon R22, which has been the refrigerant of choice in residential heat pump and A/C systems, is being phased out. This could mean a service or upgrade to your AC or heat pump system is necessary to keep it running efficiently and economically this summer.

That means:

  1. Consumers with older AC or heat pump systems will have a harder time obtaining R22 beginning in 2020.
  2. Newer, more energy efficient units use a more environmentally friendly alternative – R410A.
  3. The price of R22 has increased over the last few years, and many companies have passed that on to consumers in the form of significantly higher prices.
  4. Using other types of Freon in systems that require R22 can be a fire hazard, so it is not safe to use a less expensive alternative.
  5. R22 will no longer be manufactured after January 1st, 2020. If you have an older system installed before 2000, you will need to think about upgrading soon.
